Specialization in India
In India
majority of Medical Students prepare for post graduation i.e. MD / MS /Diploma
but due to high rise in competition many students are opting for DNB which are
also available in India as an alternative.
1. MD or MS
Duration – 3 years
Most
known postgraduate qualification of MBBS in India is MD or MS.MD stands for
“Doctor of Medicine” and MS stands for “Master of Surgery”
These
courses are widely available in various Medical Colleges and Hospitals across
India. Duration of these courses is 3 years. Institute where students admit for
these courses are generally Recognized by MCI (Medical Council of India) or
they are affiliated to MCI. Students completing these courses are eligible to
practice in any state across India and also join the Medical Institutes as
Faculty.
Admission
For
admissions to MD/MS courses a student has to appear and qualify in the Medical
Entrance Examination conducted by respective institute authority. Most in every
Government institute 80 % admissions are done through State quota & 20 %
are from All India Quota. Private colleges admit 80 % seats from respective
entrances and 20 % from Management or NRI quota. These entrance tests are
conducted once in an academic year and generally between months of November to
March. And Course commences from the month of May.
Only
exception to these are AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi),
PGI (Post Graduate Institute, Chandigarh), NIMHANS (National Institute of
Mental Health & Neuro Sciences, Bangalore) which conducts exam twice a year
for the two semester viz. May & November.
Eligibility
MBBS
student who has passed & completed 1 year compulsory Internship from
medical college recognized by Medical Council of India & students
undergoing Internship are also eligible for these entrances.
For
sessions starting in May – June in respective year students who has completed
or completing their internship before 31st March in that same year are eligible
for Entrance Examination.
Some
medical Institutes like Post Graduate Institute Chandigarh & JIPMER
(Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Education & Research) Pondicherry allow
Medical Students who has passes all academics years of MBBS in single attempt
only i.e. without failing any time in their entire course.
Medical
Students who has passed MD/MBBS from Foreign Institutes outside India are also
eligible for Medical Entrance Examinations after clearing ‘Foreign Graduate Medical
Examination’ (FMGE) commonly known as ‘MCI Screening Test’ and completion of 1
year compulsory Internship in India. Such students are not eligible for PGIs
& JIPMER entrances.
Some
Institutes in India also conduct 6 years DM (Doctor of Medicine) or MCh (Master
of Chirugery / Surgery) courses post MBBS. Students can appear the respective
entrance test for admissions to those examinations of that institute.
Students
after completion of their MD/MS course from Government Medical Colleges are
mandatory to work in Government Hospital preferably Rural areas in few states
of India like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh etc.

Duration
– 3 years (post MBBS) , 5 years (for DNB Superspeciality post MBBS) & 2
years (post PG Diploma)

Diplomate
of National Board is the most popular Postgraduate choice opted by Medical
Students these days. It is a 3 years postgraduate course equivalent to MD/MS in
India and It is also recognized by Medical Council of India & Maldives
Medical Council which allows a DNB doctor to practice anywhere across India and
join Medical institutes as Faculty.
Admission
National
Board of Examination conducts entrance examination for admission to DNB
courses. These courses are available across various Medical Colleges, Institutes
& Hospitals across India & Maldives. This examination is conducted
twice a year for August & January Sessions. There are some 5 yrs DNB
courses like cardiology, urology etc which are also admitted from this entrance
post MBBS. All admissions to DNB courses are on Merit Basis. There is no
Management or NRI quota in DNB.
Eligibility
MBBS
student who has passed & completed 1 year compulsory Internship from
medical college recognized by Medical Council of India & students
undergoing Internship are not eligible for these entrances.
Medical
Students who has passed MD from Foreign Institutes are also eligible to Medical

3. Post Graduate Diploma (from
University)
Duration – 2 years
Course
Many
students opt for Post graduate Diplomas if MD/MS/DNB choices are not available
for them. This course is widely available in various Medical Colleges and
Hospitals across India. Duration of these courses is 2 years. Institute where
students admit for these courses are generally Recognized by MCI (Medical
Council of India) or they are affiliated to MCI. Students completing these
courses are eligible to practice in any state across India and also join the Medical
Institutes as Faculty after completion of DNB (Secondary) post PG Diploma.
Admission – Admission criteria is same as MD/MS
courses.
Eligibility – It is also same as MD/MS courses.
Students
after completion of their Diploma course from Government Medical Colleges are
mandatory to work in Government Hospital preferably Rural areas in few states
of India like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh etc.
