About Us :

Himachal Pradesh Medical College at Shimla (HPMC) was established in the year 1966 with admissions of 50 students in the first batch. Indira Gandhi Medical College is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. With the establishment of Medical College in the State, the hopes and aspirations of the people of the state were met with the standards of health services going on and students benefiting with the advantage of staying home and getting better educational avenues. Medical College then had a modest beginning with makeshift arrangements for hostels etc., but ecstasy of joining the Medical College located in Shimla with its salubrious climate, took away the agony.Himachal Pradesh Medical College was renamed Indira Gandhi Medical College (now popularly known as IGMC in abbreviated form) in 1984. Admission facility was increased to 65 in the year 1978. Now MBBS seats have been increased 65 to 100. 2794 number of MBBS students have passed out from this Medical College till 2014. Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla has also been granted the status of Regional Cancer Center by the Govt. of India, thus providing much needed comprehensive cancer care to the cancer patient. Essential periodical up gradation of facilities for investigations and treatment have been going on regularly and in the year 2005 facility of Open Heart Surgery has been made operational and in 2006 MRI facility has been added. Second Cobalt Unit & 64 slice MDCT are also operational. Infrastructure : Indira  Gandhi  Medical College, Shimla (IGMC) came into being  in 1966  at Snowdon which was the residence of Lord Kitchnar (1873-74) the erstwhile Commander-in Chief  of  British-Indian  Army. Over the years, the Medical College has grown to a stature of a modern & prestigious medical institution in the Country. The college is having 33 departments equipped with latest machinery and  equipments. Several of its alumini are the faculty  members in  well known Medical Colleges in  India and  abroad. Multi-storied buildings at Snowdon, Kamla Nehru hospital together contribute 872 beds to IGMC. Sophisticated equipments like MRI Scan, C.T. Scan, Cobalt Units, Gamma Camera, Selectron, Upper G.I. Endoscope, Colonoscope,Bronchoscopy,  Nuclear  Medicine  facilities, ERCP, Ultrasonography, Haemodialysis, Pulmonary  function test  including  diffusion studies  and blood  gas analyzer, Intensive Care Unit, Pacemaker, Holter Monitor, Colour Doppler Echo-cardiography, image  intensifier for orthopaedics and Cardiology. Tread mill test, E.C.G.,Laparoscopic surgery, transurethral  resectoscope, laser and microwave diathermy for physiotherapy are in operation. Open Heart Surgery is also now operational. Beside these a New 64 slice CT Scan There is a library maintained by the college for the students/staff. The library contains books on all the topics related to medical field. IGMC, Shimla consists of 2 sets of hostels viz. BHABA, RAMAN and Girls hostels maintained by the college.

The Himachal Pradesh University conducts a Combined Pre-Medical Entrance Test on behalf of the Government of Himachal Pradesh (Department of medical Education & Research) in terms of the provisions of Ordinance 14.1 & 14.B(1) (a) of the First Ordinances of H.P. University and other related rules and regulations framed for the same by the Government of Himachal Pradesh for admission of MBBS curses in Govt. Medical Colleges (State and management Quota) located in the State of Himachal Pradesh. MD/MS : The Himachal Pradesh University conducts an entrance Test on behalf of H.P. Government in terms of the provisions of paragraph 14.15 of the first Ordinance of the University for admission to various postgraduate courses in I.G.M.C. Shimla. IGMC, Shimla is affiliated to the H.P. University and admissions are made to the courses as recognized/permitted by the Medical Council of India/Himachal Pradesh University strictly in accordance with the conditions laid down by the MCI and the State Government.It is recognized and Permitted by Medical Council of India. Qualification :  MBBS degree or its equivalent qualification recognised by the Medical Council of India. B.Sc. Para -Medical : 10+2 course of a recognized university or board with science i.e. medcial group ,chemistry, Biology &  English with 50% marks for General candidate and 40% in case of SC,ST & OBC candidates.
